To climb over border fences between Spain and Morocco, refugees use hooks and shoes with screws attached to the soles. The holes of the fences are too small for the tips of shoes.

A shoe symbolizes something worthless in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, taking off one’s shoes symbolises humbling oneself. In Islam, the shoe is a symbol of dirt, which is why Muslims take their shoes off when entering a mosque. In Greek culture, an empty shoe is a symbol of death.
