ART IS MONEY

Jukka Yli-Lassila from Helsingin Sanomat, the biggest newspaper in Finland, asked my opinion for his article about the current centers of the art world. I think the center moves to where the star curators open shows and the richest collectors' private jets fly.
You can make Timbuktu the center of the art world if you spend enough money and do there a flashy biennial. It's all about money, art is just like any other business. Where the economy grows, more prestige provided by art is needed.
Damien Hirst said that "art is about life, the art market is about money" but the Australian artist Anthony White makes art about money. He sells his paintings for the amount painted on the canvas and then does the next painting with one unit higher amount. In the US dollar series the available work is now $145. I've reserved the one million dollar painting.
WRONG SIDE

Last night, I watched the war film Pearl Harbor. I celebrated the triumph of Empire of Japan's 1st Air Fleet and didn't feel any sympathy for the American heroes.
Maybe anti-Americanism? Maybe because my fatherland and my grandfathers were fighting on the same side with Japan in World War II?
I received a communist upbringing in a capitalist society and had a hard time as a kid being bullied by class mates and teachers for my family's political activities. I was different from the the other kids, I couldn't identify myself with James Bond but with his Soviet enemies. I learned to be always on the wrong side.
I'm still always on the wrong side. I never agree with majority, common sense or political correctness. Maybe that's why I'm the best artist of Cervera de los Montes.
IS EVERYTHING POLITICAL?
23 February 2007, Cervera de los Montes
To cover the costs of Power One exhibition, Lisa was anxious to sell some of the collaborative work I did with Black Centipede, but she said that people were disturbed of it's political content. And I thought I just drew some funny mascots!
Ten years ago, the Britrock band Skunk Anansie sang "Yes it's fucking political, everything's political. Yes it's fucking satirical, everything's satirical".
Last year, Priska kicked me out from her fancy Chelsea gallery because my work didn't sell, it was too political she said. Political warfare, political religion and political soft drinks sell - so why not political art? Artists like Santiago Sierra do political art and I'm just fooling around. And I think his art sells like weapons of mass destruction!
PC IN PRC

I must forget now Japan for a while and concentrate in China. Raul invited me to participate in the group show Surge in Beijing in April. I'll do my basic set with wall painting and drawings.
I asked Raul what kind of art I can do in a dictatorship. He replied "please go all out and see if you can get the show closed and have us arrested (just joking, sort of)". I think I'll do something praising the Communist Party of China. That would be really obscene.
TOO MANY MILLIONS & GINTONICS
18 February 2007, Cervera de los Montes
I was tired of networking and the whole art world after Tokyo but on Wednesday Bert phoned me from Madrid and convinced me to go to Arco, he said it was boring there without me.
Although it was awesome to be with him - he’s one of my best friends and my only gallerist (actually co-gallerist with Dirk), I was bored too – I hope it’s the last time I go to an art fair without exhibiting (and selling!) my work.
Everybody was speaking about Damien Hirst’s work - or prices- in Hilario Galguera’s booth The small dot paintings were €300.000, the bigger paintings €900.000 and the sculptures between 3 million and 6 million euros, everything sold in few hours. That kind of prices are enough to buy a good football player! For how much Ronaldo was transferred from Real Madrid to AC Milan few weeks ago? Would you prefer to have Ronaldo or a Damien?
Now I’ve been hungover all the weekend – too many Bombay Sapphires with tonic in Bar El Cock. It's carnival in the Catholic world and New Pig Year in China but I don't have appetite for jamón or any other meat.
